Departments

Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care

The Anaesthesia Department started in 2009 as a small unit with the pioneer consultant Dr. Oyewole Ezekiel and anaesthetic nurses. Anaesthesia Department in FMC Lokoja has witnessed significant improvement. Over the years, the hospital management has invested heavily in the qualitative and quantitative improvement of the department, by the recruitment of relevant personnel and acquisition of equipment.The new six bedded ICU and theatre complex will soon be functional.

Accident and Emergency

The Accident & Emergency Department (A&E) is a special facility within Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja that specializes in providing emergency medical and surgical care to patient and staff. The facility provides acute care for patient present without prior appointment; either by their own means or by that of an ambulance.

Administration

The Department of Administration can be said to be as old as the Centre. The Department provides the proper indirect framework to the delivery of patient care. Such indirect in-puts affect the effectiveness, acceptability, accountability and economy of the services rendered to the patients.

Biomedical Unit

Biomedical Engineering (BME) Unit strives to serve all clinical departments of the hospital that uses biomedical equipment. Clinical departments include all staff of medical and allied health services, namely: Doctors, Nurses, Medical Lab. Scientist, Technicians, Physiotherapists, Respiratory therapists, Pharmacists and Other Allied Health Professionals.

Community Health

The Department of Community Health Federal Medical Centre Lokoja was created in 2014 under the exceptional leadership of Dr Ahuoiza Ojiah as the Head of Department.

Chemical Pathology

The department of chemical pathology is one of the clinical departments in the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State. The department is an arm of the diagnostic service of the hospital that is responsible for the analysis of bodily fluids such as blood, plasma, serum, stool, urine, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, cerebrospinal fluid transudates and expedates for the purpose of diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of diseases.

Clinical Microbiology

The department of clinical microbiology and parasitology was created in 2016 following the separation of the four(4) primary departments of pathology or laboratory medicine. Although, it has existed as part of the laboratory department since the inception of the hospital in 1999.

Dental and Maxillofacial surgery

The department of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery is one of the foundational clinical departments in Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State. The department started during the transition of the State General Hospital to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State.

Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine is the first point of call for all out-patients or “cold cases” that present to the hospital where Family Physicians, Resident Doctors, Medical Officers and NYSC Doctors attend to these patients, and from there, those who require admission or further specialist out-patient care are admitted or referred appropriately.

Finance and Accounts

The Finance & Accounts department is the heart of any organization, its responsibilities range from proper record keeping, efficient financial reporting, planning, managing and controlling of financial resources.

Histopathology and Morbid Anatomy

The department of Histopathology and Morbid Anatomy was carved out from the former Department of Laboratory services in August 2016 by the Medical Director, Dr. O.O Alabi. Hitherto, it existed as a unit of that department, but by this creation, it began to operate as an independent department.

Haematology and Blood Transfusion

The department of haematology and blood transfusion was created in 2016 following the separation of four (4) primary departments of laboratory medicine. Although, it has existed as a unit in the department of laboratory medicine since the inception of the hospital in 1999.

Health Records

The health record department, Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja deals with collection of data complied on a patient to assist in the clinic area of present and future treatment. It serves as communication between members of the health team.

Housing Unit

The day-to-day operations are coordinated by the Housing Supervisor under the direction from Housing Manager. Housing Unit operates a 24-hour service from Monday to Friday with on-call duties during Saturdays and Sundays.

Internal Medicine

The department of internal medicine was established in the year 2006 following the departmentalization exercise by the hospital management. The department started by providing general internal medicine services for a couple of years.

NHIA FMC, Lokoja

National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), formerly known as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is a corporate body established under the NHIA Act 2022 by the Federal Government of Nigeria to provide access to quality and affordable healthcare for all Nigerians.

Nursing Services

The department of Nursing services is the largest in Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Lokoja. The department create favourable environment for nursing staff to provide effective Nursing care to patients and their families. Services are provided to prevent illness, promote health, restore health and rehabilitate patients.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja started in 1999 as one of the foundation clinical departments following conversion of the then General Hospital Lokoja to a Federal Medical Centre before the recent upgrade to a Teaching Hospital. Since then, the Department has been active in its triple functions of service, training and research.

Orthopaedics

The Orthopaedic department was one of the foremost departments in Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja created then under Surgery department during the commencement of Residency Training Program in 2012. The Orthopeadic department utilizes three Wards viz Orthopaedic, Male Surgical and Female Surgical Wards with a total of sixty-five (64) bed spaces into which patients are admitted for in-patient care.

Ophthalmology

The department which started as a unit under the hospital clinical services has evolved to become one of the cardinal departments in the hospital actively involved in all specialist care of the eye, residency training and eye related community services with National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria accreditation for Part 1.

Paediatrics

The Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Nigeria serves as the major referral centre for primary and secondary health centres in Kogi state and the neighbouring states. The Centre is a 300bed capacity hospital out of which 55 are Paediatric. Of these, the EPU has 10 bed spaces, the SCBU has 18 bed spaces, the PMW has 15 bed spaces and the PSU has 12 bed spaces.

Physiotherapy

The department started at about the same time FMC Lokoja was created in the year 2000. It was started as a unit and headed by PT Eniolorunda T. N (Mrs)(Retired). It has since grown to a full department under the Clinical Services of the hospital. The department renders clinical services covering the inpatient and outpatient sections with various clinical specialties with dedicated Physiotherapists.

Psychiatry

In meeting its mandate of holistic care to people of Kogi and neighboring States, Psychiatry services officially commenced in Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja in 2011 with the coming on board of a Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Egbeola Adeyemi Collins. Before then, patients suffering even from minor behavioural and emotional problems had to be referred to facilities existing in other states for adequate psychiatric care.

Procurement Unit

The Procurement Unit of FTHL is primarily responsible for the procurement of all supplies, equipment and services at the lowest cost that meets or exceeds the requesting department specifications for the performance of duty in support of all hospital operations.

Public Relations Office

The PRO is one of the units under Directorate of Administration that is fully responsible for all incoming and outgoing mails. The primary objective of this unit is to provide an excellent service to all hospital employees. Their sole responsibility is to coordinate with the post office with regard to all mails, packages addressed to hospital.

Radiology

Radiology Department is one of the foremost unit of the clinical arm of Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja. The department with the aid of the available radiological equipment’s assist in accurate diagnosis of cases for proper management. The department is located between the Female Surgical Ward and VCT opposite the main theatre.

Security Managemement Unit

The Security Management focuses on providing a safe & secure working environment at FMCL for its staff. It also ensures a safe & secure environment for patients and visitors.

Stores and Supply Unit

The Medical Store Supply Department (MSSD) is responsible in requesting, receiving, storing and providing the medical, office and housekeeping requirements of all requesting departments.

Surgery

The Department of Surgery was one of the pioneer Departments of the hospital at its inception. Since then, it has undergone several structural modifications over the years with some departments such as the departments of Orthopedics and the department of otorhinolaryngology being carved out of it.

Works and Services

The Works and Maintenance Department identifies, evaluates and take inventories of equipment and utility systems utilized throughout the institution.
