Community Health
Overview
The Department of Community Health Federal Medical Centre Lokoja was created in 2014 under the exceptional leadership of Dr Ahuoiza Ojiah as the Head of Department. When the department was created it was given leadership over the following units:
- Staff clinic
- Environmental Unit
- Immunization Unit
The department has evolved over time and has been involved in various activities that has added more units and responsibility. In 2016 the department was tasked with the duty of carrying out disease surveillance in the hospital during the Lassa fever epidemic in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) Kogi State office and the Kogi State Ministry of health. In 2018 the Adolescent Friendly Clinic (AFC) was established with support from the Centre for Integrated Health Program (CHIP) providing care primarily to adolescents living with HIV. During the Covid-19 Pandemic the department developed strong ties with the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control to strengthen its Infection Prevention and Control unit (IPC). This led to the development of an IPC Team and the revival of the IPC Committee.
