Dental and Maxillofacial surgery
Overview
The department of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery is one of the foundational clinical departments in Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State. The department started during the transition of the State General Hospital to the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State.
The Head of Department usually emerges from among the Consultants within the Department, and he/she coordinates all activities (service, training and administration) in the department. He represents the department at Management level, and carries out all tasks and duties assigned by the Management. He is also answerable to the Management through the Head of Clinical Services.

The clinics hold every day of the working week -Monday to Friday between 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Theatre Sessions
The elective theatre day is Friday of the week.
Ward Rounds in Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery
The ward round of the department takes place in the male surgical ward, the female surgical ward, the paediatric surgical ward, the accident and emergency unit and other wards in the hospital where maxillofacial patients are admitted. The ward round days are Tuesday and Thursday.

Dr Olaniran Folaranmi Oluwasegun was born in the late 70s into the family of Mr and Mrs Olaniran Samuel Olaonipeku. He had his primary School Certificate in 1990 at Akeetan Primary School, Oyo, Oyo State followed by Secondary School Certificate in 1996 at Saint Bernardine's Grammar School, Oyo, Oyo State. He proceeded to Federal Polytechnic Ede, Osun State where he had a distinction in National Diploma (ND) in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) in 1998. Thereafter, he bagged a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in 2008 at the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria.
Previous work experience includes Dental House Officer at University College Hospital Ibadan, Dental Officer at General Hospital, Ifaki, Ekiti State, and Residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at University College Hospital Ibadan.
Dr Olaniran Folaranmi Oluwasegun had his postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and was awarded Fellow of West African College Surgeons (FWACS) in April 2021. During his Postgraduate training at the University College Hospital, he was the Chief Resident of the Department.
He had six (6) articles published in peer review journals to his credit.
Dr Olaniran was employed at Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State as Hospital Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in June 2021.
