Ophthalmology
Overview
The department which started as a unit under the hospital clinical services has evolved to become one of the cardinal departments in the hospital actively involved in all specialist care of the eye, residency training and eye related community services with National Post Graduate Medical College of Nigeria accreditation for Part 1. Some pioneer staff of the department such as DR O.O. ONAWOLA , MR JOSEPH MELIGA, MRS BLESSING UKWEDE, HAJIA KAKA retired after meritorious services to the hospital some months ago.

Specialist clinics with minimal waiting time

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) Screening - Every Wednesday - 12 noon
Theatre Sessions
- 3 elective theatre sessions (Tuesday / Wednesday / Thursday)
- Emergency Theatre sessions also available when required
- Low vision clinic - every Friday
Residency Training
- Seminar presentations/journal reviews by resident doctors every Tuesday. Sessions are usually brain-storming as the presenter answer questions from other Doctors and Consultants after each presentation. Other contributions and clarifications from other Doctors enhance better understanding of the topic.
- Slit lamp presentation holds every Thursday. This aims to help Residents understand use of the slit lamp in examination of patients and making appropriate diagnosis.
- Wet lab Sessions: purpose driven skill acquisition curriculum to aid surgical skills.
- Community outreach / high volume surgical services in partnership with Sight Savers International and kogi State Ministry of Health.
Quarterly examination for residents:
This include Multiple Choice Question Sessions (MCQS) and OSCE Examinations.Refraction sessions:
All residents are involved in refraction sessions.
Optometry / Dispensing unit services
Daily optometry services which cover refraction procedure, low vision evaluation/rehabilitation/orthoptics/ contact lenses/dispensing spectacles and lenses/glazing of lenses/lensometry/counselling patients on appropriate lens wear culture etc .
