Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Overview
The department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Federal Teaching Hospital, Lokoja started in 1999 as one of the foundation clinical departments following conversion of the then General Hospital Lokoja to a Federal Medical Centre before the recent upgrade to a Teaching Hospital. Since then, the Department has been active in its triple functions of service, training and research. Professor Momoh Anate was the pioneer consultant in the department and was also the pioneer Medical Director of the institution at inception.
The department is committed to provision of evidence-based specialist care in obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as human resource development through training and research. Our vision is to help in the reduction of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality; produce more specialists for improved and effective service delivery and embrace the enormous challenges of infertility and gynaecological cancers with a view to reducing the burden.
The Department has been active participant in the training of house officers and resident doctors since 2008 and 2011 respectively. In the last 11years, the Department has been preparing trainees for certification by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Surgeons. Since the inception of training programs, 12 fellows of the 2 colleges have emerged from the department.
While engaged in these training and research activities, more than 40,000 women have had babies delivered in our labour ward, a sizeable population of them having been referred for life-threatening complications in pregnancy and labour. Many others have received specialist attention for various gynaecological disorders.
The Department commenced gynaecological endoscopic services in 22nd September 2015 and colposcopy services in 2018 with the aim of providing the latest and more advanced reproductive health services by way of evaluation as well as treatment of common gynaecological problems including infertility and gynaecological cancers. Our ultimate goal is to advance female reproductive health services to subspecialty levels in the major subspecialty arms of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and offer subspecialty procedures affordable to all that require it.
