Chemical Pathology
Overview
The department of chemical pathology is one of the clinical departments in the Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja, Kogi State. The department is an arm of the diagnostic service of the hospital that is responsible for the analysis of bodily fluids such as blood, plasma, serum, stool, urine, synovial fluid, pleural fluid, cerebrospinal fluid transudates and expedates for the purpose of diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of diseases.
The department commenced activities as a small unit under the department of Medical Laboratory services at the inception of General Hospital Lokoja, with a staff strength of one medical laboratory scientist. During this period only basic chemistry tests such as fasting/ random blood glucose pregnancy test and urinalysis were done. Thereafter the unit grew in staff strength to include Laboratory Technician/ Assistant, medical laboratory scientists with a pathologist as the head of department of the four units; Chemical pathology, Hematology, Histopathology and clinical Microbiology. The unit metamorphosed into a full fledge department in the year 2016.
