Nursing Services
Overview
The department of Nursing services is the largest in Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Lokoja. The department create favourable environment for nursing staff to provide effective Nursing care to patients and their families. Services are provided to prevent illness, promote health, restore health and rehabilitate patients.
It has 309 registered nurses and 232 Health Attendants with 234 bed spaces.

The head of nursing services department oversees all the activities of the department. The activities of all nurses and health attendants are directly coordinated and supervises through its ward managers in the following patient wards and clinics:

Services
- Ensuring general organization and management of patients, ward and clinics
- Nursing care for inpatients, outpatients including children, adolescents, middle aged and aged.
- To promote hospital policies
- The nursing services serve as administrative body in the institution
- Conducting family planning services, ante-natal care, delivery services and post-natal care to the patients
- Co-ordinates and supervises all nursing activities.
- The education unit of the department is responsible for coordinating all the nurses, students clinical teaching, clinical presentations from all the wards/units every second Wednesday of the month.
- Crèche facility for babies
- Provision of services for tuberculosis infected patients through DOTs clinic.
- Guidance, counseling and provision of services to orphans and vulnerable children in collaboration with NGO (CIHP Centre for Integrated Health Program).
- The compound office of the department oversees and report to the head of department nursing services, all the hospital clinical and non-clinical activities and events that occurs during the morning, evening and night, or during public holidays and weekends
- The head of Nursing services is a member of the top management committee (TMC) of the institution which is responsible for planning, decision- making and policy making in the hospital.
- Use of Nursing process and theories to prioritize and individualize, to our patients.
- To ensure nursing audit and performance evaluation.
Intended services
Immunization unit
Nurses were in charge of this unit some years back and the department is seriously preparing to take charge due to the recruitment of public health nurses and some of the attendants are senior community health extension workers.
Nursing internship/practicums
Bearing in mind the effort of the Management to upgrade this facility to teaching hospital, the department is making effort and seeking permission for the training of nurse internship training. If this is approved, graduate nurses on practical under supervision will render a lot of services which will increase nursing output in the department.
Psychiatric Nursing
With the effort management is putting in place to build a psychiatric unit, very soon we will be able to admit mental ill-health patients. Nurse specialist in this area have already been recruited. =
