Overview
The department of haematology and blood transfusion was created in 2016 following the separation of four (4) primary departments of laboratory medicine. Although, it has existed as a unit in the department of laboratory medicine since the inception of the hospital in 1999.

Services
Laboratory activities
- Preparing, viewing and reporting of peripheral blood film and bone marrow slides.
- Running of samples for full blood count, (FBC) Genotype, Clotting profile, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) etcetera.
- Screening, grouping and cross-matching of blood, storage and issuing out of safe blood.
- Blood components preparation.
- Carrying out bone marrow procedure.
Clinical activities
- Running of Haematology/Oncology and Sickle cell clinics every Wednesday afternoon by 1p.m
- Conducting ward rounds for in- patients.
- Chemotherapy administration for oncology patients, both in-patients and out-patients.
- Attending to clinical and laboratory consults from all departments.
- Investigation and management of blood transfusion reactions.
Teaching
Teaching and training of medical laboratory interns and rotating resident doctors.

Carrying out relevant medical research
