Psychiatry
Overview
In meeting its mandate of holistic care to people of Kogi and neighboring States, Psychiatry services officially commenced in Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja in 2011 with the coming on board of a Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Egbeola Adeyemi Collins. Before then, patients suffering even from minor behavioural and emotional problems had to be referred to facilities existing in other states for adequate psychiatric care. Such facilities are located in Ondo, Ekiti, Kaduna, Benin, Aro in Abeokuta just to mention a few. This of course came with its attendant pains for both relations and patients.
Psychiatry existed for a while as a unit in the Department of Internal Medicine until 2017 when it became a department on its own. This feat was as a result of commitment by the present Medical Director Dr O. Alabi, who through words and actions have shown great leadership qualities, vision and support to see a vibrant, responsive and standard psychiatric services provided to the people of Kogi State in general and Lokoja metropolis in particular.
