Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care
Overview
The Anaesthesia Department started in 2009 as a small unit with the pioneer consultant Dr. Oyewole Ezekiel and anaesthetic nurses. Anaesthesia Department in FMC Lokoja has witnessed significant improvement. Over the years, the hospital management has invested heavily in the qualitative and quantitative improvement of the department, by the recruitment of relevant personnel and acquisition of equipment.The new six bedded ICU and theatre complex will soon be functional.
Residency training started in July 2014.The department is currently partially accredited by both West African college of Surgeons and the National postgraduate medical college of Nigeria.
The current staff strength of the department include; 6 Consultant, 3 Senior Registrars,4 junior registrars, 3 Anaesthetic nurses and 3 technicians. 7 ICU trained nurses and 3 cardiothoracic nurses.

The services provided by the department can be categorized into four (4) major groups:
Provision of Clinical Services:
This entails provision of perioperative (Pre-operative, Intra-operative and Post-operative) management of elective and emergency surgical patients which involves provision of general or regional anaesthesia for a variety of surgical operations like, general surgery, neurosurgical surgery, paediatric and neonatal surgery, obstetric & gynaecological surgery, orthopaedic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, otorhinolaryngology surgery, urology surgery, burns & plastic surgery, ophthalmic surgery.
The department also provides 24 hours cover for labour ward theatre, ophthalmic theatre and critical care intensive unit for patients that are critically ill and are in need of one or more organ supports.
The department is also often involved in the resuscitation of any patient that suffers cardiac arrest in any wards or anywhere within the hospital.We are also occasionally involved in the transfer of critically ill patient within or outside the hospital.
Training of Staff:
The department is involved in the training of resident doctors (both registrars and senior registrars) of anaesthesia and residents from other departments rotating through anaesthesia.
Research:
The department is involved in carrying out researches either independently or in collaboration with other departments in the hospital.
Administrative Function
The head of department and the consultants are also involved in the day-to-day administrative management of the hospital.
Schedule
We render services both elective and emergency every day of the week, then only emergencies on weekends. The Intensive care unit renders 24 hours services.
