About Dr Bernard Itopa Ododo

Dr ODODO Bernard Itopa, is a trained medical practitioner who obtained his first degree from the University of Ilorin, College of Health Sciences, Nigeria in 2001.  He had his Internship at the University of Ilorin Teaching hospital between 2002 and 2003 and served his mandatory national youth service (NYSC) in River’s state with the Nigerian Police Force Clinic- Moscow Road, Port Harcourt between 2003 to 2004.  Following his passing-out from NYSC scheme, he worked with some Missionary and private hospitals (St Bredans catholic hospital Bacita – Kwara state and   Kosemani Hospital – Kwara, St Mary Catholic Hospital Gwagwalada- Abuja).  He took up his first Public Service appointment with the Kogi State Hospital Management Board in 2004 and served as Medical Officer in charge of General Hospital, Iyale - Dekina Kogi State till 2006, when he voluntarily withdrew his service with Kogi state following his appointment into Federal Medical Centre, Lokoja as a medical officer in October 2006. 

His quest for continuous upgrade in medical knowledge prompted him to explore the pathway to medical postgraduate residency.  He sat for Residency Primary Exams in Radiology of both National and West African Medical Postgraduate Colleges which he passed in 2007.   The Federal Medical Center Lokoja management delighted by this, took a decision to allow him proceed on residency training in Radiology (been that as at then, no resident Radiologist in the service of the hospital).   He proceeded to have his residency training in Radiology at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.   He obtained success in Part I   in 2010 in both West African College of Surgeon and National Postgraduate Medical Colleges in Faculty of Radiology.   During his training, he was made the Chief Resident of the department of Radiology. He sat for and passed the Part II of the West African College of Surgeon (Radiology).  

Returning to FMC Lokoja in December 2012, he was appointed as Consultant Radiologist to the hospital where he served and became the Head of the Radiology department between 2015 to 2019.  He took a leadership and management in health course and got certificated by the University of Washington in 2019.   In view, is Masters in Public Administration course at Federal University Lokoja, Postgraduate Institute. 

Aside his core competence in the Clinical and administrative functions, he is equally active as member and leader in his professional associations.  He served as Vice Chairman (I) of Nigerian Medical Association Kogi 2014 – 2016.  He served as Vice Chairman, Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, FMC Chapter, 2013 – 2015 and subsequently became Chairman of same association 2015-2017.  

Dr Ododo is a member of National executive council (NEC) of Nigerian Medical Association from 2016 till date as chairman, National Committee on Radiation and Radiation Medicine Affairs.

He is a member of the Medical and Dental Council (MDCN) Medical Diagnostic Committee from 2020 till date, the regulatory body of medical practice in Nigeria.

Dr Ododo was elected and confirmed by the governing board of the hospital as the sixth Head of Clinical Services in January 15th 2020 for initial two-year term, which got renewed for the second term of two years in 2022, it was March 2023 while still serving this tenure that the Federal Medical Centre status of the hospital was upgraded to Federal Teaching Hospital, as approved by the President of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari.  His office   nomenclature automatically transformed from Head of Clinical Services to Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (pioneer person to occupy the office in the hospital).

He is an astute medical practitioner (Diagnostic Radiologist) with predilection for Women Imaging and Fertility health radiology.   He is also a member of the Association of Radiologists in Nigeria (ARIN), Association of Radiologist of West Africa (ARAWA) and European Society of Radiologists.

He is reviewer to the West African Journal of Radiology since 2015 till date, where he has reviewed over 12 reputable scientific articles by some authors, already published.  

He loves and plays Badminton as recreation and listening to meaningful gospel and instrumental / classical music.  He is happily married and blessed with two children.
